40 Handtied Flies Great for the Firehole River and Yellowstone Park Image
This is a collection of 40 flies tied by James Baginski, who started fishing and tying flies over 30 years ago, pursuing any and every species of fish willing to eat a fly. From the first time he fished the Firehole River in Yellowstone National Park in June of 2000, he has been obsessed with the river, viewing it as perhaps the world’s most unique dry fly fishery. Fed by geothermal features, surrounded by geysers and mats of thermophile bacteria, filled with weed beds, complicated by microcurrents, the Firehole is a dry fly fisher’s dream. Though the fish aren’t big, the prolific pale morning dun, baetis, and caddis hatches often bring literally hundreds of fish to the surface in a single run. Baginski, who now resides in Colorado and regularly fishes the South Platte, has experienced many single days on the Firehole with more opportunities to cast to rising fish than he typically does in an entire summer in Eleven Mile Canyon on the South Platte. From the many years James lived in and around Yellowstone, including one year of fishing the Firehole all 30 days in June, he has gotten to know the river intimately and makes annual visits to the world’s strangest spring creek, and knows what bugs work well on the river. This collection of flies would be perfect for spending several days on the river in the early weeks of the Yellowstone National Park fishing season.
