From tyer James Baginski, who donated great flies to last year's auction as well: In my 30+ years of fly fishing, right up there with my fondest memories of fishing some of the world's greatest trout streams and bonefishing on tropical flats are my experiences riding my bike along urban rivers, armed with a 6 wt. In terms of diversity of fish species, one would be hard-pressed to find a greater opportunity to catch as many different species of fish as in our often forgotten, neglected, maligned urban rivers. The majority of my urban fly fishing has been on the Tennessee River in Knoxville, TN and the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers in Columbus, OH, though other experiences have shown me that they ought to work anywhere. This fly box contains many of the patterns I have come to rely on for fishing urban rivers, several of which have caught largemouth, rock, smallmouth, and white bass, channel catfish, crappies, bluegills, sunfish, carp, and many more, often in the same pool or run! If you have access to an urban stretch of river that isn't too polluted to support fish life, these flies should work for you! Wear waders, read those e. coli warnings, get out there, and have fun! Box contains 30 flies. James Baginski is an associate teaching professor of Geography and Environmental Studies. He has been fly fishing for over 31 years, and tying flies for over 30 of them--once he started fly fishing and losing flies in trees at age 12, his parents forced him to take fly tying lessons to cut down on costs!
